Evolve Three's Maestro C tablet has a swiveling bezel stand and a screen-protecting keyboard (video)

Evolve Three's goal of creating the world's most versatile touchscreen tablets seems to be going swimmingly so far -- first the boutique Australian outfit introduced the triple-booting Maestro, and now it's got an Oak Trail slate on the way with some most intriguing hardware. You see, not only does this Maestro C have a 1.5GHz Intel Atom Z670 inside, 2GB of DDR2 RAM and most all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a netbook PC, it's also got a bezel that physically rotates -- turning into a chunky kickstand and exposing ports at the same time -- and a removable wireless keyboard that doubles as a hard-shell protector for the entire 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen. There's also a 32GB "high performance" SSD, optional 3G connectivity, a pair of stereo speakers and once again, three operating systems (Android 3.0, MeeGo and Windows 7) to choose from at startup. The only things keeping us from purchasing our customary two units is lingering worry that the other shoe has yet to drop... not to mention a starting price of $729, sans optional keyboard.

Friday night topic: Unlocking Portal 2

Yes, Valve has done a pretty clever thing, setting up a system whereby owners of any of the 13 indie games that comprise The Potato Sack bundle can help usher in an early release for Portal 2 by playing one of those games. Like many of you, I...

Official Facebook app goes to v1.5, still no notifications?

Posted on Sun, 17 Apr 2011 02:27:00 EDT by Daniel Rubino

We just got word that the Facebook app for Windows Phone got bumped to v1.5, which you can grab right now in the Marketplace.

Earlier, we reported that this app was supposed to be getting notifications and that it was coming "soon". While an update did in fact come soon, we're not seeing any options under Settings for notifications but perhaps we're missing something (it's only been about 5 minutes since we updated). We did noticed the "Refresh" setting is now "Cache expiration" and set at 10 minutes, but other than that...

Anyways, you can grab the app here. Sound off in comments on anything you notice different or better and we'll update this post with the info.

Thanks, @deeper2k, for the heads up

AT&T's "unique" NoDo Features

Posted on Sat, 16 Apr 2011 11:56:00 EDT by George Ponder

We're learning a little more on the upcoming AT&T NoDo Update for the Samsung Focus and LG Quantum. As we mentioned the other day with the expected release on April 19th, the NoDo update will contain additional features unique to AT&T.

Microsoft's Eric Hautala has confirmed that the AT&T update has moved from Testing to Scheduling and adds,

"I forgot to mention the update we?ll be shipping to AT&T customers also includes support for two special AT&T features. The first is ?WISPr? protocol support, which makes it possible for your phone?s data connection to automatically switch over to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots when in range. The update also includes support for AT&T Address Book."

The WISPr support sounds interesting and if you frequent AT&T hotspots, this may save you on data package minutes. You can find out more about the AT&T Address Book here but basically it's an online address book you can sync with your Windows Phone. While having another source for contacts may not be that exciting, the online components to AT&T's Address Book does look interesting.

Hautula also recognizes that delay with the update for Surround owners is probably a letdown but explains that third party software earmarked for the Surround needed additional testing.

Windows Phone 7-certified microSD cards emerge at AT&T stores: $32 for 8GB

Well, well -- what have we here? For avid users of Windows Phone 7, you no doubt remember the hubbub last year surrounding the so-called difficulties with Microsoft's latest and greatest mobile OS accepting microSD cards. We'd been pounded with news of "WP7 certified microSD cards," but even now, they're more ghost than reality. That said, it looks as if the tables are turning, with an nondescript AT&T store grabbing fresh stock of "certified" 8GB Class 4 microSDHC cards. Based on the packaging, it's fairly clear that Microsoft's taking the lead here, but SanDisk has been knighted to provide the hardware. $32 will soon get you a card that doesn't destroy itself upon insertion in your Samsung Focus, and we're guessing that they'll be available to purchase sooner rather than later. So, you sizing up, or what?

AT&T NoDo update to include WISPr protocol and AT&T address book

The NoDo update for WP7 brings a few new features to the table, but if you are on AT&T, it will bring more than the standard updates that most end users have already received or are in the process of receiving. In the AT&T version of NoDo, which may explain...

Get email design chores under control with equinux Mail Designer

If you've ever had to code together a complex HTML email then you know how painful it usually is. It's like taking a trip back to 1999 before the web discovered standards and everyone was still doing table-based design -- only with the addition of cumbersome inline CSS, and the challenge of dealing with scores of different mail clients and their divergent HTML rendering. Unless you do this every day the process can be unwieldy at best and a downright nightmare otherwise. For most of us, learning to code our own email is way more work then it's worth.

That's where Mail Designer, a new application from equinux, comes in; it provides a rich graphical email composer that goes far beyond what you'll be able to do in your preferred email client's editor. Mail Designer takes an iWork approach, focusing on a balanced feature set that makes it easy to use and hides all the technical bits in the background before sending your email to Apple Mail for delivery.

Farewell, Internet

DownloadSquad
Well, here we are. More than four years after launching, Switched and DownloadSquad are unfortunately being closed. I've been thrilled to work at these two sites that have expanded tech coverage beyond the usual gadgets and social networks to cooking, culture, design, art and more. It's been humbling to work with these incredibly dedicated and talented teams of writers, and it would have been impossible to do it without them.

Going forward, you'll still be able to get the best tech news coverage from Engadget, HuffingtonPost Tech, Joystiq and TUAW. While we're still working out some of the details, Switched and DownloadSquad will continue to live on the Web and be fully accessible via search. Understandably, our Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr presences will quiet down, but you can still follow the Switched and DownloadSquad writers on their personal accounts. Thanks for reading.
